Signs you need sliding door glass replacement.
Glass doesn't last forever. A chip from a stray rock, a failed seal that lets moisture in, or a panel that no longer meets hurricane code. These are the situations where glass replacement makes sense. Here's what to watch for.
Crack or Chip in Glass
Even a small crack weakens the entire panel and will spread over time, especially with Florida's temperature swings.
Fog Between Panes
Cloudy or milky appearance between the two layers of glass. The insulated seal has failed and moisture is trapped inside.
Broken or Shattered Panel
The glass is fully broken. This is an emergency. The opening needs to be secured immediately.
Failed Seal (Cloudy Glass)
You can't wipe the cloudiness away because it's between the glass layers. Your energy efficiency has dropped significantly.
Glass Doesn't Meet Impact Code
Older homes may have non-impact glass in areas that now require it under Florida Building Code.
Visible Moisture Damage
Water stains, mineral deposits, or mold growing between the glass layers. This won't get better on its own.
Standard glass vs. impact glass on the Treasure Coast
Florida Building Code (FBC 7th Edition, Chapter 16) requires impact-rated glass or approved hurricane shutters in the Wind-Borne Debris Region. On the Treasure Coast, this covers most barrier island properties in Hutchinson Island, Jensen Beach, and Vero Beach. If your home is within one mile of the coast, impact glass is likely required for any replacement. We'll check the code requirements for your address and make sure the new glass meets them. For more details, read our post on impact door Florida code requirements.
Don't ignore foggy glass or small cracks. A compromised panel hurts your energy bills, lets UV damage your floors and furniture, and won't protect you during hurricane season (June 1 through November 30). Call us at (772) 207-4146 for a free quote.
How we replace sliding door glass.
Glass replacement is a bigger job than roller or track work, but we've done hundreds of these across the Treasure Coast. Here's exactly what to expect.
Measure and Assess
We measure the glass panel precisely, check the frame condition, and determine whether you need standard or impact-rated glass based on your location and local code.
Remove the Door Panel
We lift the door off the track and lay it on padded supports. The old glass is carefully removed from the frame without damaging the aluminum.
Install New Glass
The new glass panel is set into the frame with fresh glazing tape and sealed properly. Impact glass gets additional structural bonding per manufacturer specs.
Reinstall and Test
The door goes back on the track. We adjust rollers, test the slide action, check the lock, and clean up all debris and old glass from your home.
Can you replace just the glass, or do you need a whole new door?
Good news: in most cases, you only need the glass. If the aluminum or vinyl frame is still in good shape, we remove the old glass and set a new panel into the existing frame. This saves you hundreds of dollars compared to a full door replacement. We always inspect the frame before quoting glass-only work. If the frame is warped, corroded, or compromised, we'll tell you straight and give you options for a new door installation instead.
What about insurance coverage?
Many homeowner insurance policies cover glass replacement if the damage was caused by a storm, accident, or break-in. We can't file your claim for you, but we provide detailed invoices and photos that make the process easier. If your deductible is lower than the replacement cost, filing a claim can save you money. We see this frequently with Stuart and Fort Pierce homeowners after storm season.
Glass Replacement Pricing
* Estimated labor costs. Parts and materials may be additional. We quote the exact price before starting.
